About Laguna del Laja National Park

Laguna del Laja National Park is located in the Biobío Region of Chile, nestled in the Andes mountain range. Established in 1958, the park encompasses diverse landscapes ranging from glacial lakes and dense forests to volcanic peaks, including the iconic Antuco and Llaima volcanoes. The park’s centerpiece is Laguna del Laja, an expansive and pristine glacial lake providing picturesque views and a vital habitat for native birds and fish species. Dense forests of lenga and coigüe trees sweep up the mountainsides, supporting a variety of wildlife such as pudú deer, foxes, and numerous bird species including the rare black-chested buzzard-eagle. The park’s volcanic peaks offer a rugged, alpine environment perfect for adventurous hiking and climbing, with trails leading to snowfields, lava fields, and cascading waterfalls. In winter, the region becomes a popular snow sports destination, especially around the Antuco volcano where skiing is possible. Visitors are drawn by the park’s balance of accessible nature and wilderness, combined with breathtaking panoramic views of volcanoes and forests. The park also holds cultural significance, situated within traditional Mapuche territory. Laguna del Laja provides a remote, tranquil outdoor experience with well-maintained trails, camping facilities, and ranger support. It remains a top destination for nature enthusiasts seeking to explore the southern Andes’ volcanic landscapes and pristine ecosystems.
